What Causes Acne Scars
The most common type of acne scars are the "ice-pick" scars that are caused by lost tissue. Acne scars are caused the same way that all scars happen. Scars happen when there is tissue damage. Damaged tissue causes the body to start repairing itself. It needs to do this to guard against infection. Collagen is sent by the body to the damaged tissue to start the repair process. When the body makes excess collagen, it builds up into a smooth scar.
What Are Your Treatment Options
Injections�Collagen injections placed into the site of the scar has been effective for a lot of people. What you should know about this treatment is that it need to be repeated on a regular basis, usually about every three to six months. The way this works is that the collagen that is injected under the skin will puff out the scar area. Because the scar is puffed out it becomes less noticeable.
Laser Treatment�During laser treatment the goal is to change the shape of the scar to make it less noticeable. Lasers are aimed at the scars to do this. This is another treatment that will probably need to be done multiple times.
Dermabrasion�This is a very common form of treatment for a lot of acne scarring. Dermabrasion involves removing a thin layer of skin with a fraise or brush that is on high spped. By removing the surface layer some shallow scarring is alos removed and deeper scarring does not have the depth it once had. This treatment is done under a local anesthesia. Another form of this is microdermabrasion which also removed the surface skin, but this is done with crystals of aluminum oxide that pass through a vacuum.
Body Fat�Otherwise known as the autologus fat transfer, this treatment involves using your own body fat. Fat is taken from you and injected into the acne scar which will puff it out just like the collagen treatment. As with the collagen treatment, this process must be repeated to remain effective.
Other Types of Treatment�Skin grafting and skin surgery are other treatments available but because of the extreme nature of these treatments, they are only used on those who have very deep scarring and extreme situations.
